Tasmania – Days 4 & 5

I’m updating my blog for yesterday and today. I couldn’t do it last night, I was very tired and had a long sleep instead. I’m really tired again now, I’ll soon be heading off to dinner and suspect I’ll be straight to bed when I get back.

Yesterday, Day 4, we started the day by looking around Queenstown, photographed a few things including the small steam train departing on it’s way to Strahan.

4.5 hours was then spent driving to Hobart. It’s not a bad drive, it’s a winding road that has it’s picturesque moments. It was slow going at times, as we were stuck behind caravans and motor homes much of the way, and unfortunately we skipped seeing the carvings at Derwent Bridge to make up some time. LittleB and I both regret it, but we’ll see it someday.

Hobart has been the best part of our trip so far, we wish we had more time to see it more, but in a future trip to Tasmania, we’d certainly spend more time here. After arriving in Hobart, we checked in to our hotel at Battery Point and walked the streets nearby where the Salamanca Markets are, and around the docks. We found an excellent steak restaurant only a few minutes walk from the hotel, we’re going back there again tonight. :)

Day 5

Today we were at Port Arthur all day. It’s a photographers paradise. We have suffered hot temperatures the whole time we have been in Tasmania, but Port Arthur was cold. When we were at Port Puer, the wind was very strong, and extremely cold. It started to rain next, and we had no shelter. Strong cold wind and rain, with no shelter. Fortunately the rain was light, and didn’t last long so we were just left with the cold wind.

Walking through the ruins was good, we took a lot of photos. The weather was changing all the time, most of the time the strong cold wind was there, sometimes light rain, sometimes sunny with only a gentle breeze so it felt hot, then the wind would come back, the clouds would come back, so too would the light rain, then it was clear and sunny… and so it went on. Many seasons in one day.

We did miles of walking, I’m feeling stiff and sore, and am looking forward to a nice steak and a VB.

Tomorrow we head off for Swansea, but first we’ll try to make an early start so that we can have more of a look around Hobart before we go, including a drive up Mt Wellington. I’m looking forward to seeing the East Coast.

Well done Aussies in the cricket, I’ve been catching it while I can. Wish I could have watched it. I did watch some of it on my iPad while eating lunch at Port Arthur when Clarke got his hundred. :)

We loved Port Arthur and Hobart. If only we had planned to only spend time here! At least we saw what the West side was like, so we know better for our next trip. Swansea tomorrow, it better be good. :)

Can’t wait for that steak meal. I just checked my work emails too, there were lots! It was so good to forget about work for a while, but reality is going to be hard next week. Better enjoy this while I can. :)
