After completing a fire hydrant in 3ds Max yesterday (following a tutorial), I decided it’s about time to stop having my hand held and see what I can make on my own, just looking at reference images.
I’m interested in making models that eventually could go together to make a grunge street scene. I thought I could start with a garbage bin. I looked in Google images to see if there was something interesting to model. I found this bin photo below:

I think I got fairly close. I decided to go my own way with the lid handle, I didn’t like the look of the loopy handle. Looking at mine now though, I can see I should make the handle come up a bit higher. It’s a quick adjustment to make, I’ll do it before I use it in a scene. The raised loops on the lid, and the ones that go around the bin are a bit smaller on mine, I wasn’t trying to match it perfectly. I couldn’t see the handles on the side very well, so I modeled them on another bin photo I found.

Below is the bin in a sample scene. It has a sample texture applied to it. I’ll find a better texture for it when I have time, and make the bin look a bit more beaten up. I can clone this bin a couple of times and have a few bins beaten up a bit in different ways. That would look better than one bin.

I’ll post the fire hydrant soon.

Very well done, I love the grungy look
